Designing the Perfect Media Wall for Your Home

Creating a media wall in your home can transform the way you enjoy movies, music, and gaming. A well-thought-out media wall is not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality, organization, and personal expression. Whether you’re a movie lover, avid gamer, or music enthusiast, a media wall can be the centerpiece of your entertainment environment. Let’s dive into how you can design the perfect media wall for your home.

Understanding the Media Wall Concept

A media wall is essentially a designated space in your home where all your entertainment devices are. This usually includes your television and can include a sound system (we can fit both for you), gaming consoles (we can optimize location and even build in ventilation for hot devices), and usually decorative elements that represent your taste and help the whole thing feel a bit more homely. We believe a good media wall hides away the ugly stuff, and just makes the place look super chic.

Why Have a Media Wall?

From reducing clutter, to making your room feel more organized and inviting. Every customer we've had raves about how much better their space is now that they have a media wall. According to a recent survey by the Home Entertainment Association, 67% of homeowners believe that a visually appealing media setup enhances their overall entertainment experience. And since adding a media wall boosts the value of your home, it's a sound investment.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Media Wall

The first step in designing your media wall is to select the ideal location. Consider these factors:

  1. Viewing Distance: Ensure that your seating arrangement is appropriately distanced from the screen. When you're buying a new TV it can be difficult if you don't have it on site to know what you'll be comfortable with, but as a rule of thumb we say approximately 2.5 times the diagonal screen size away from the TV.

  2. Natural Light: Avoid placing your media wall in direct sunlight to prevent glare on your screens.

  3. Room Layout: A lot of customers only consider the walls that they have, but we can add a media wall as a room divider to create two spaces in a long and narrow room. Another option is to not go end-to-end, having a bit of existing wall with some paneling each side can look really good.

Media Wall Design Styles: Finding Your Style

Your media wall should be a reflection of who you are which is why every Media Wall we build is unique. A great starting point and a base for most of the walls we do, is to work out what style of cupboard units or drawers you want (if any).

  1. Slab Style: If you prefer clean lines and a simple look, go for sleek slab style cupboards. Organic materials are really in fashion at the moment too as people look to high-end timeless finishes... oak has recently had a bit of a revival and so has walnut. If your budget allows, we can build in veneered materials which compliments modern finishes well. Alternatively, you can't go wrong with a spray finish.

  2. Contemporary Glamour: If all the bells and whistles is more your flavour, we'd advise on shaker style cupboards. We build all our cabinetry bespoke, so we can bead / mould to suit existing furniture, or we can create something unique or based on ideas you've seen online. A particular favourite with our customers right now is a continual frame, so your end cupboards have frames 3 sides, but middle cupboards just on the top and bottom, this gives the look of one long cupboard.

Selecting the Right Equipment for Your Media Wall

Honestly, we'll keep it short here. Curry's, John Lewis, you can't go wrong. Whatever you choose, we can integrate it for you, but there are a few bits of kit we'd suggest checking out:

  1. Philips Hue: We'll admit it, we're big fans. App controlled, colour changing and syncing to your audio, these set ups really add a bit of wow factor to your media wall. There are cheaper options too which are also really nice, ask us about our strip lighting options, we sell some really great ones.

  2. Sound System: Our favourite is the Sonos Art Ultra. Check it out, see if it's for you, don't overlook the audio quality. If it's out of your budget, we recommend getting a sound bar set up. A lot of customers prefer them recessed for a streamlined look, but they actually work brilliantly when wall mounted.

  3. Fire: They're popular for a reason. We build a lot of walls with fireplaces, but we build just as many without. If a fire is on your wish list, you'll find some great options online. We also supply and fit fires from Ezee Glow, Firez and Gazco. British Fires and Planika also make some beautiful fires that we regularly install. These are just a few names for you to look up. If you need any advice or want to see some previous builds with these fires included let us know and we'd be more than happy to help you make a decision.

Final Thoughts on Media Wall Design

Pinterest and Instagram are your friends here. Most of our customers come to us with a picture of a media wall they'd like to draw inspiration from, and this is a great way to start. Screenshot cabinetry you love, panelling options, etc. When we get to the design stage, our designers can help you visualise these options with illustrations so that you can choose between different design elements. If you're struggling with your layout, we'd be more than happy to help by creating some floorplans for you. Sometimes it just helps to see everything to scale.
